The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has challenged civil and building contractors in the country to be quality-minded for government initiatives, including the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF), to be sustainable.
Line minister Ben Phiri said this in Mangochi District at the end of this year’s Malawi Building and Civil Engineering and Allied Trade Association (Mabcata) annual general meeting, which was held in Mangochi District.
“Contractors are the most important sector when executing the CDF. Therefore, we expect them to perform with the highest level of integrity. Let me mention here that the granting of contracts under CDF will also depend on the performance of a company. This will ensure efficiency and high quality of construction works in the end.
“CDF is not here to be looted by any person, including you, contractors. The State President [Peter Mutharika] wants the CDF to benefit Malawians by making sure that every constituency, regardless of the political affiliation of the Member of Parliament, is developing,” he said.
Mabcata Vice President Kondwani Kadango said contractors would abide by CDF guidelines and desist from corrupt practices.

He said Mabcata would work with the authorities, including the government, to blacklist all contractors found doing shoddy work during the execution of the CDF and other public projects.
