Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) has embarked on a talent identification exercise after receiving an invitation to send 20 youngsters for a youth camp in Malaysia later this year.
Ham President Wanthaza Mughogho said the association is excited to have been invited to the youth camp, which will help in shaping the future of the youngsters.
“Ham has been invited to participate in the prestigious FIH World Youth Hockey5s Camp and Festival, a global event organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) with support from Olympic Solidarity,” Mughogho said.
Mughogho said the opportunity has been facilitated through the collaborative efforts of Ham and Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc), and it will see Malawi’s young hockey talents potentially showcasing their skills on an international stage. “The event is designed for both boys’ and girls’ teams under-16 years of age, promoting gender equality in youth sports development.
“The event consists of two parts: a national camp to be held in Malawi this month or October, followed by the international festival in Ipoh, Malaysia from December 17 to 21, 2024,” Mughogho said.

He said the camping will include a comprehensive national training pack provided by FIH.
“The pack itself is extraordinary, consisting of 80 sticks, 200 balls and four sets of goalkeeper kit. Expert coaching and development support from FIH.
“This opportunity not only promises to boost the skills of Malawi’s young hockey players but also has the potential to elevate the profile of hockey in the country and contribute to its long-term development,” Mughogho said.
Moc Director Naomi Chinatu said the collaboration between Ham and the national Olympic Committee exemplifies the power of partnerships in advancing sports development in the country.

“We recently supported a training workshop for coaches which happened after a long time. This camp is ideal as it will equip youngsters with necessary skills,” Chinatu said.
