Imagine a future where our homes, businesses and communities are powered by renewable energy, creating a sustainable and prosperous world. The solar industry is at the forefront of this vision and needs skilled professionals to make it a reality. That’s why I am excited to propose an ideal solar renewable energy apprenticeship programme for Malawi!
This comprehensive programme would span 12 to 18 months, providing personalised learning that adapts to each apprentice’s needs. It would be divided into four carefully designed phases to build expertise and confidence.
In the Initial Training Phase (three to six months), apprentices receive intensive classroom instruction and hands-on training. They would dive into the fundamentals of solar energy, electrical theory and safety protocols while gaining an overview of the industry. This sets them up for success with initial certifications and on-the-job training.
During the On-the- Job Training Phase (six to nine months), apprentices gain real-world experience by working alongside seasoned technicians or engineers in the field. They assist with installations, maintenance and troubleshooting— truly getting their hands dirty while learning from experienced professionals.
The Advanced Phase (three to six months) allows apprentices to specialise in specific areas like irrigation or energy storage within solar renewable energy. They can earn advanced certifications and take industry-specific courses, preparing them for specialised roles.

Finally, during the Final Project and Assessment Phase (three to six months), apprentices showcase their skills through a comprehensive final project. They also undergo assessments leading to certification and graduation, recognising their accomplishments throughout this rigorous programme.
To create an ideal curriculum for this apprenticeship programme, we need thorough coverage of every aspect necessary for success in this rapidly growing field. From understanding basics like radiation levels and photovoltaic systems to advanced applications like system design principles and configurations suitable for different scenarios, apprentices will gain a well-rounded education.
Apprentices will also learn about electrical circuits’ theory, applications and wiring practices, ensuring they are confident when dealing with electrical systems’ safety measures. They’ll master practical installation techniques, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting skills and adapting systems for optimal performance while complying with existing building codes, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority standards, required permits and staying up-to-date with industry regulations.
Moreover, business skills are crucial for those aspiring to become entrepreneurs or small business owners. Marketing strategies, effective communication, customer service, planning and financing capabilities will be nurtured, empowering these leaders to navigate successfully while staying competitive.
