Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) will go to polls this morning at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe with President Jappie Mhango and aspirant for the post of Treasurer Andrew Mkwezalamba set to go unopposed.
At a time, Moc Vice President Flora Mwandira and Vice General Secretary Frank Chitembeya are bidding farewell as they have not been nominated, there is a tight race in other positions.
Moc General Secretary captain John Kaputa (retired) was nominated for the post of vice president and he will face General Kakhuta Banda.
Moc Treasurer General Henry Sakala was nominated for the post of secretary general where basketball official Lisungu Banda is vying as well.
The battle for the post of vice general secretary will involve Malawi Aquatic Union General Secretary Beatrice and Dennis Kumwenda from Malawi Handball Association.

Surprisingly, 11 officials will battle for executive board member posts and they are Sushira Khamisa, Maggie Chikuni, Tichitechi Nkhwazi, Pyson Likagwa, Peter Gomani, James Kaunda, Osbourne Banda, Willy Kumilambe, Kenneth Dzekedzeke, Isaac Chimwala and Malombo Kayira.
Moc Judicial Commission Chairperson Wapona said each affiliate has a specific number of nominations it can make depending on whether it’s a Moc recognised sports organisation or a Commonwealth recognised sport organisation.
“The same goes with voting. The number of votes an association has depends on its affiliation status with Moc,” the lawyer said.
Sports analyst George Kaudza Masina said it was not a strange scenario as most candidates opt for executive member positions due to either lack of self-confidence or a vote of confidence to those running unopposed.

“This has been the trend in most sports associations but it is not a healthy situation. For the presidency, looking at the candidates competing, it is not easy to dislodge the current president Jappie Mhango and the best was to opt out and give him the necessary support to avoid the embarrassment associated with a loss at an election.
“At the same time, Moc is a very closed organisation which outsiders cannot easily penetrate as it is association based in terms of nominations,” Masina said
