Japanese ambassador to Malawi Yoichi Oya has pledged his government’s support towards sporting activities including judo in the country.
Oya made the pledge on Saturday during an open day for Judo for Peace Programme held at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.
He said his government will ensure that more judo-related activities are taking place across the country.
Oya encouraged people who patronise the sport to use it in bringing change in the society.

“I wish to encourage all judokas under this programme to continue borrowing a leaf from the philosophy of judo. This philosophy will help you to maintain a positive attitude and develop resilience to excel despite the challenges that may prevail. It is my sincere hope that through the spirit of judo, we will build a peaceful and harmonious society,” he said.
Ministry of Sports Deputy Director of Sports Kinnah Phiri expressed the government’s commitment to work together with various sports associations in the country.
“The Head of State [Lazarus Chakwera] has put a lot of emphasis on developing each and every sport activity including judo; so we will continue engaging them [sports associations] as we have done by attending this event,” Phiri said.
Judo Association of Malawi President John Kaputa said over the years the programme has demonstrated great potential in promoting unity among refugees.

“This is promoting unity among refugees as it provides them with an opportunity to forget about their homes but to give them an opportunity to stay together,” Kaputa said.
During the event, some individuals were recognised for their contributions towards the development of judo in the country by awarding them with certificates.
Judo for Peace programme was launched in 2018 as a tool for promoting education and social cohesion among refugees at the camp.
