Malawi National Football Team captain John ‘CJ’ Banda turned out to be the hero for Mozambican side UD Songo when he scored the winning goal in his team’s 3-2 beating of TextAfrica at Estadio de HCB in Songo on Wednesday.
The goal helped Songo to become joint Mocambola League leaders with Costal do Sol at 40 points and a goal difference of 15.
Songo replaced Black Bulls on second position. Bulls have 39 points from 18 matches.
The former Blue Eagles attacking midfielder, who is also Songo’s vice-captain, said competition is very high in the league and winning the title this season will be a big challenge.
“It is always important to score for your club and, at the same time, help the team to chase the league title. It was a tough game but we managed to win after working extra hard. We will keep pushing so that we can win the title,” Banda said.
Zambian Webster Muzaza and Tinotenda Muringai of Zimbabwe scored the other goals for Songo before Textafrica equalised to make it 2-2.
Banda scored five minutes before the final whistle to secure the all-important points for Songo.
Costal have the Malawian quartet of Richard Mbulu, Yamikani Chester, Loyd Njaliwa and Chikoti Chirwa.
Meanwhile, South Africa-based forgotten Flames star Limbikani Mzava found his way into the Magesi team that beat Orlando Pirates 3-2 on Saturday to reach the Carling Cup quarterfinals.
Mzava has spent almost two seasons without a club after parting ways with another South African side AmaZulu.
He said it was exciting to return to the field of play.
“I am not yet done with top flight football. I played 65 minutes of the match and it was one of those good moments. Returning to the field of play to continue playing in the top flight will give me lots of energy to keep going. I just need to continue working hard,” Mzava said.
