The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) requires K59 billion to fully implement its 2025-26 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.
Dodma Commissioner Wilson Moleni said this Wednesday.
Moleni estimated the programme’s total financial need at K209.4 billion.
He said Dodma had already secured K149.7 billion of the necessary funds.
In a separate interview, Dodma spokesperson Chipiliro Khamula said they were grateful to partners who were supporting the initiative.

“We are grateful to all our partners, both local and international, for their support. We continue to appeal for more support to assist in bridging this gap and ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.
The programme’s objective is to provide food assistance to those in need during the lean season.
This initiative began after President Peter Mutharika declared a state of disaster in late 2025.
Mutharika’s declaration followed the 2025 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report.

The MVAC report projected that over four million people in the country would face severe hunger between October 2025 and March 2026.
Initially, Mutharika declared a state of disaster in 11 districts, including Blantyre, Chikwawa, Lilongwe, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Nkhotakota, Nsanje, Phalombe, Salima and Thyolo.
However, in November 2025, he extended the declaration to all 28 districts due to worsening hunger conditions.
