Heavyweights Kukoma Diamonds have opted to start early preparations to boost their chances of reclaiming their dominance on the national scene.
Diamonds retained the Rainbow Paints Blantyre District Netball League but failed to win the Salima Sugar Netball Trophy, having narrowly lost to Blue Eagles Sisters 26-25 in the semi-finals.
In the third-place play-off, Diamonds beat Tigresses 35-26 to settle for bronze.
Diamonds Coach Noel Mussa said they regrouped last week to prepare for the 2024 season.
“Our goal is to restore our reputation on the national scene. Last season, we ended on third position during the national tournament.

“It is our desire to do well this season. We have started preparations earlier to avoid the calamity that hit us last season,” Mussa said.
He added that they might beef up their squad with four players to build a formidable side.
“Currently, we have listed possible targets. Upon proper examination, we might sign three or four players to enhance our chances of doing well on the national scene and also defending our supremacy at the regional level,” Mussa said.
Captain Jessica Mazengera Sanudi welcomed the team’s plan of signing new players.

“If we are to do well next season, then we need a healthy squad. We need a deep squad to be competitive. We, as players, need to fight to be in the starting line-up. We should be featured on merit based on our training performance. This can happen only when the squad is full of talented players,” the attacker said.
Meanwhile, Blantyre District Netball Committee General Secretary Annie Hanjahanja has said they will soon announce dates for the 2024 season.
“Teams should start preparations because the announcement will be made very soon,” Hanjahanja said.
