President Lazarus Chakwera says Malawi is committed to providing a conducive environment that would attract foreign direct investors.
Chakwera made the remarks after meeting a group of over 50 investors from across Africa, led by pan-Africanist Patrick Lumumba, at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe Monday.
“My administration has been aggressive in attracting investors that can compete fairly in all sectors, especially in the sectors of agriculture, tourism and mining,” Chakwera said.
The investors are coming in at a time the country is looking for serious investors to meet industrialisation goals and produce enough for domestic use and export.
Chakwera said the coming in of the investors is a clear indication that they have trust in his administration.

“I would also like to believe that your coming is an expression of your trust and confidence in the investment environment that my administration is creating to make all sectors in Malawi productive and competitive. I want you to know that creating an economic environment that fosters competition with fair play has come at a cost,’’ he said.
According to Chakwera, the investors have come in Malawi following his good relationship with Lumumba, who promised to bring more investors to support his vision of enhancing the productivity of Malawi’s economy for the achievement of job and wealth creation.
In his remarks, Lumumba said Malawi has potential to export products across Africa.
“We have had an opportunity of looking at Malawi 2063 [vision]. We believe that Africa, and Malawi, can be a focal point in the area of agriculture as well as tourism and mining,’’ Lumumba said.
