President Lazarus Chakwera has urged Malawians to focus on positive developments that are happening in the country.
Chakwera was speaking Sunday during centenary celebrations of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Hannock Msokera Primary School Ground in Kasungu.
He said during the time when church founder Hannock Msokera contributed to the change of government from colonial leadership, there were people who worked against him.
The President claimed that even now, there are people who always work against government’s efforts by sabotaging development activities. He did not provide further details.
“During the time the church was contributing to freeing this country, there were people who were benefitting from colonialism and their history is forgotten. The only people who can be remembered are those like Msokera, who positively contributed to the nation,” Chakwera said.

He added that even now, there are people who do not appreciate what he described as government’s efforts in developing the country.
“Despite the efforts, it doesn’t mean we don’t have people who will destroy electricity poles that the government is installing.
“It doesn’t mean we don’t have people who steal food meant for those struggling with food insecurity. It doesn’t mean we don’t have people who do not appreciate the railway and security personnel houses being built in the country,” Chakwera said.
He then praised African Methodist Episcopal Church for what he described as a significant role it played in the liberation struggle.

The President said the church was key in having founding president Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda travelling to America, where he learnt medicine and developed detestation of colonialism.
“That is why 50 years ago, Dr Banda came to this place to pay homage to Reverend Hannock Msokera Phiri, who gave him the armour for fighting the Federation of Nyasaland and Rhodesia,” he said.
African Methodist Episcopal Church Presiding Elder Reverend Manuel Chamamba hailed the President for taking time to attend the event and recognising the efforts made by the founder of the church in Malawi.
Chamamba added that it was important to recognise the positive efforts that others are making in the country.
“The President is doing a lot to develop this country. The Agriculture Tourism Mining project is one notable development that will see this nation developed,” Chamamba said.
