Malawi’s kick-boxers have won five bronze medals at the African Kickboxing Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to Malawi Kickboxing Association (Makba) General Secretary Bright Limani, two fighters won two medals each, with one lifting one. Limani said Bashil London finished third in the point fighting 64 kilogrammes (kg) and light contact 64kg categories to lift his two medals.
He said Emmanuel Namate also won two medals after third-place finishes in the point fighting 75kg and kick light 75kg, with Mike Mando clinching his medal in the ring 71kg K-1.
Limani described the performances as impressive considering the fighters’ inadequate preparations.
“We did not have the resources for preparing our athletes in a proper manner. This was a big continental competition with top fighters from 12 countries across Africa. But we just had a few days’ training with basic resources at our disposal. We believe the results could have been better with more resources,” he said.
