Disagreements have ensued between government-trained primary school teachers and their mother ministry, the Ministry of Education, with the teachers demanding permanent employment while government feels that is an impossible demand.
The teachers have since penned President Lazarus Chakwera to take action within five days, warning that failure to do so will compel them to camp at the State House.
Agnes Chimbiri Molande, Malawi Ambassador to the United States Esmie Chombo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, among others.
The President indicated on his Facebook page Sunday, after attending the UN Women Generation Equality Midpoint event, that his administration has reaffirmed its position to continue empowering Malawian women and girls in line with Sustainable Development Goal Number 5.
“We are determined to use existing legislative, policy and governance frameworks to continue giving our women and girls equal opportunities for jobs, social protection, businesses and education,” Chakwera said.

At the event, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous told Chakwera that the gender equality cause has already received financial commitments of up to $407 billion, out of which $20 billion (about K20 trillion) has already been secured.
This, according to Bahous, does not include $10 billion (about K10 trillion) that has already been spent on the same.
As we went to press, Chakwera, who left the country on Friday, was scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir to explore potential synergies the two countries’ economies can build across sectors such as agro-processing and financial services, among other things.
The Malawi leader was also scheduled to meet International Labour Organisation Director General Gilbert Houngbo to discuss issues such as how Malawi can best provide decent jobs and social security.
