The Ministry of Education has said innovation must be central to Malawi’s ambition of becoming a prosperous and industrialised nation by 2063, in line with Malawi 2063 vision goals.
The ministry says developing human capital through science and technology is critical if the country is to shift from being a consumer to a producer, especially in sectors such as agriculture, where research is essential.
Ministry of Education Director of Quality Assurance Professor Golden Msilimba said this Wednesday during Expo 2025, an event led by DMI St John the Baptist University at its Lilongwe campus.
The event was organised for participants to showcase student innovations, among other things.

He pointed out that agriculture and other productive sectors could not be modernised without scientific research and technological advancement.
“That is why we are urging young people to take up sciences and go to schools that invest in innovation and good values. The ministry is actively supporting the establishment of virtual laboratories in subjects such as physics and chemistry,” Msilimba said.
DMI University Vice Principal for Academics Freeza Jefutala said the student projects presented at the event demonstrated creativity and potential for solving real-life challenges.
“We want to support these students by helping publish their work so that they can benefit from their own ideas,” Jefutala said.

Bachelor of Arts in Education student Florence Phiri, who received an award at the expo, said the experience built her confidence.
The event was also attended by students from several secondary schools, who had the chance to appreciate the innovations displayed by university students.
