By Isaac Salima:
A recent survey conducted by Malawian citizen Shyley Kondowe and some concerned stakeholders has favoured Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera to win next Tuesday’s elections.
The survey has projected that Chakwera would get 55 percent, leading Peter Mutharika of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on 34.8 percent.
UTM is projected to get 6.03 percent of the votes, with 10.2 percent of prospective voters yet to decide on who to vote for.
The findings show that the survey was conducted between September 1 and 8, 2025 across the country, with the researchers indicating that the sample involved eight registered voters per ward.

It says 3,664 respondents were reached.
“The overall research population of registered voters is 7.2 million. The selection of voters that were surveyed basically relied on the researcher’s capability to reach the required number of respondents in all the 28 districts since it was not known which presidential candidate voters preferred,” the report reads.
The survey also found that there is obvious regional political party bias, which seemingly is influencing voter preferences and, in turn, has an effect on the presidential candidates.
“However, MCP is projected to garner more votes in the Northern and Central regions whereas the DPP is securing the Southern Region as displayed in the graphs below…,” it says.

The findings indicate that Chakwera will have a smooth run in the Central Region as he is expected to get 81.5 percent against Mutharika 12 percent.
In the Southern Region, the survey shows that Mutharika leads with 63.7 percent as Chakwera trails, with 23.1 percent of the vote.
Chakwera is also projected to rule the Northern Region as he is expected to get 46.8 percent against Mutharika’s 30 percent.
And MCP is, according to the findings, expected to get 73 parliamentary seats in the Central Region while DPP could get 51 legislators in the Southern Region.
The survey follows last week’s Institute of Public Opinion and Research, which predicted Mutharika’s victory with 41 percent if polls were held last month.
The findings showed that Chakwera would get 31 percent while Kabambe came third with 6 percent.
