By Isaac Salima:
About 102 public secondary schools are expected to benefit from sports equipment that Ministry of Education is distributing across the country.
Most schools have already received the equipment, which includes netball shoes, balls for handball, football goal posts, chessboards, javelin, discus and volleyball nets.
In the course of the week, Ministry officials embarked on a tour to officially hand over the equipment, worth about K200 million, to various schools.
The ministry procured the equipment under the Equity with Quality and Learning at Secondary Schools Project.

In the Southern Region, Christopher Banda from the ministry’s Public Relations Office took reporters to Mulanje and Chambe secondary schools in Mulanje District, and Mpatsa and Phalombe secondary schools in Phalombe District.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera said the move is aimed at promoting sport in schools.
“This year, the ministry has directed all schools to incorporate sports in their learning activities. This is so because it has been getting accusations that it is doing little to promote sports in schools.
“The first phase of the project will see us distributing over K200 million worth of equipment to schools to achieve this. We are targeting all sporting activities so that no student is left behind,” Nkuonera said.

The development has excited some school authorities, which have commended the ministry for the gesture.
Mulanje head teacher William Nyapwala said lack of sports equipment has, for long, been a challenge.
“We are therefore very grateful to the ministry for considering us. What is most exciting is that the equipment is also for other minority sports,” Nyapwala said.
A form four student at Phalombe Secondary School, Ireen Matchado, said: “While commending the ministry for the initiative, I am urging it to provide us with adequate resources for all sports disciplines.”
