Lilongwe-based musician Moses Makawa on Saturday reminded people of his heydays when he delivered a surprise act at Mangolongondo Night held at Kwaharaba Art Gallery and Café in Blantyre.
Makawa was not on the line-up for the three-hour concert but, following his presence, host of the event Robert Magasa decided to invite him to the stage to briefly share his music.
“I am based in Lilongwe and just came down here for other things and I so I decided to come and support fellow artists. As a musician, it was not possible just to watch, hence treating people to a short performance,” Makawa, the maker of ‘Ali Mmanjamanja’, said.
His performance, which saw him dishing out two songs starting off with the late Michael Yekha’s ‘Ndiwerengere Ndalama’ and then ‘Ali Mmanjamanja’, came after Katelele Ching’oma, who has also been inactive in recent times, had entertained the sizeable audience with his songs.
On a cold Friday night Mangolongondo also brought on board performances from Khonjwa Ngwira and John Fire, real name John Ndaferankhande.
Khonjwa, who is slowly building base, offered a number of songs mostly done in Tumbuka.
The artist is also expected to perform at the same venue this coming Friday, when he will share the stage with Angitawo Band.
“It’s been exciting sharing the stage with other artists. I am happy with the progress I have made in as far as music is concerned. I am trying to build something that people can identify me with,” he said.
John Fire was the last to perform during the concert that also featured Moffat Aligiza.
He said he was excited that Mangolongondo Night had returned to the fold and that they will make sure that they hold it every month end.
“Last month, we failed to have it because of challenges beyond our control but we are thankful for the support and this is all about offering the much needed entertainment and also supporting different causes,” John Fire said.
