Zambezi Evangelical Church on Saturday held a fundraising dinner at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre with the aim of raising funds for a mega church project that is set to cost them over K200 million.
The church said the fundraising dinner marks the beginning of its fundraising activities of raising money for the mega church and that, going forward, it will also holding other events.
Families turned up for the dinner, whose guest of honour was politician Ephraim Chibvunde and donated K1.5 million.
Chibvunde challenged Christians and churches in the country to take a leading role in setting up its structures and not only rely on donors.
“I am impressed that Zambezi Evangelical Church has taken up that drive. If you look at where they are coming from, they started way back in 1892 and, so, they would have developed enough by now but most churches have not moved forward to look at developing on their own and have mainly relied on donors. We need to do our with this,” he said.

The church’s general secretary Reverend Robert Yanduya said they were happy with the outcome of the event and that they had targeted to raise close to K50 million.
“We are thankful for those, who came and the dinner has been a success. This is just the beginning; we want to even hold fundraising shows where we will be able to raise more money and even interact as Christians,” Yanduya said.
The chairperson for the fundraising committee Lloyd Chirwa said fundraising dinner, which was hosted by Ian Nankhuni, is the beginning of more fundraising activities to come and that the support they received during the fundraising dinner has motivated them to be on toes.
