A total of 160,586 students are expected to sit this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations from Tuesday to July 21, 2023.
This represents an 8.52 percent rise from the 147,977 candidates who sat the previous MSCE examinations in 2022.
Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) Public Relations Officer, Mayamiko Chiwaya, told The Daily Times in Zomba that all is set for the national examinations.
“You may wish to note that there is a difference between the previous and current candidature, owing to the fact that we have taken on board the candidates whose examination fees were misappropriated by their schools’ authorities,” Chiwaya said.
Some candidates did not sit this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education and Junior Certificate of Education examinations due to various reasons, chief of them being that school authorities misappropriated examinations’ fees.

Maneb, however, softened up and allowed those who failed to take the tests in the regular system to do so in a deferred arrangement.
Similarly, victims for MSCE have been allowed to sit their examinations so that their issues can be sorted out later.
On May 9 this year, Maneb indicated, through a statement, that a total of 160,524 (74,944 female and 85,580 male) would sit the exams, a figure that had excluded those whose examinations fees were misappropriated.
Chiwaya said the board is prepared to administer the examinations.

She also reminded Malawians that examination malpractices are punishable by law and warned candidates, examination administrators and the general public to desist from such acts.
Chiwaya said security during the administration of the examinations will be provided by the Malawi Defence Force and the Malawi Police Service.
Out of the 147,977 students who sat the examinations in 2022, 86,477 passed, representing a 58.44 percent pass rate.
