Fun, pomp and ecstasy characterised the cultural night that took place on Saturday at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) in Blantyre.
Some of the activities that spiced up the event, organised by the university’s Catholic Students Organisation (CSO), included mock wedding, cultural dances such as Gule Wamkulu, catwalk and chinkhoswe.
There were also music performances which featured acts such as Sammy and Slyc of the ‘Ndapanga Dala’ fame.
The event, which went all the way to midnight, was aimed at raising funds for CSO as well as promoting culture.
Mubas Students Union General Secretary Hope Banda described the event as a success.

“Since youths are obsessed with social media such as Facebook and Whatsapp, we thought we should hold a cultural night just to show the beauty of culture as well as encourage young people to use such platforms to promote culture, hence we need to be proud of it,” Banda said.
He further said that culture was one of the tools for promoting development of the country and that it attracts tourists, who bring in the foreign exchange and also serves as a unifying factor among Malawians.
“Culture is one of the key unifying factors. This is the reason the country has several cultural celebrations such as the Umthetho, Umhlangano Wa Maseko Ngoni, Chibanja Cha Yao, Gonapamuhanya and Mulhakho Wa Alhomwe, among others. With this unity, it becomes easier for development projects to be carried out due to enhanced coordination and corroboration,” Banda said.
One of the students who attended the night, Emily Phiri, expressed satisfaction with the event, saying she enjoyed the event to the fullest.

“I have learnt a lot as far as culture is concerned. I now know that culture is not only for entertainment but also a method through which we can be united as people. I also have learnt the importance of preserving culture,” Phiri said.
