Excitement has engulfed domestic women’s football fraternity as the 2026/27 National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership will kick off on September 19.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) announced the development yesterday after several months of uncertainty.

This could put to rest fears that had rocked the women’s football fraternity following the delay of the second edition, nine months after the conclusion of the inaugural edition.

The full fixture for league was expected to be released yesterday. “The stage is set for the 2026/27 NBM Women’s Premiership. Ten teams one title,” Fam statement reads.

The package for this year’s league is yet to be unveiled. Last year, NBM sponsored the inaugural edition to the tune of K280 million.

National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) president Adelaide Migogo was the return of the women’s league would boost the Scorchers preparations ahead of the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

“We are excited. This really shows that NBM has confidence in women’s football and the girl child. The girls will be active in preparation for the World Cup,” Migogo said.

Silver Strikers Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba said the resumption of the NBM Women’s Premiership was long overdue “It is good development that the league is back after waiting for nine months. We are looking forward to continue from where we left last season,” he said.

Silver Ladies won the inaugural edition after a dominant campaign which saw them amassing 48 points from 18 matches. They recorded 18 victories and two losses without a draw in the entire campaign. For winning the title, Silver pocketed K10 million plus a trophy whereas runners-up Ascent Soccer Academy and MDF Lionesses got K5 million and K3 million, respectively.

Ascent Operations Director Thom Mkolongo was also excited with the new. “We have waited for so long. We expect another competitive league but we are ready for it,” Mkolongo said.

Each of the 10 teams received K13 million as subvention plus two sets of uniforms and five match balls.

This year’s NBM Women’s Premiership will also comprise 10 teams including three debutants Chitoliro Heroines, Pact Women’s Football and Rumphi Sisters. The trio earned promotion after winning championships in their respective regions. Chitoliro won the Southern Region Women’s Football League whereas Pact and Rumphi finished as champions in the Central and Northern Region, respectively.
