Newly appointed Minister of Sports Youth and Culture Patricia Wiskes has said there is a need to close the gaps that are hindering the growth of sports in the country.
Wiskes, said this in an interview Friday after President Arthur Peter Mutharika named her Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture in the new administration.
Mutharika released his full cabinet on Thursday evening.
The Lilongwe City Nankhaka lawmaker said she plans to meet stakeholders once gets into office to establish her starting point.
“First of all let me take this opportunity to thank His Excellency Arthur Peter Mutharika for trusting me to be the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture. All I can say is that I want the world to recognise Malawi as a sporting country. I am sure that together with every stakeholder we can develop sports jointly by closing the gaps which are affecting sports development,” Wiskes said.

However, Wiskes admitted that she will have to adjust a lot as she had never been involved in sporting activities before.
She said the new constituency development fund under the Democratic Progressive Party regime will ease pressure for sports development.
“I have never run sporting events in the past but I have been involved in youth activities when I was with Lilongwe District Council so I do not think it is something that can be tough. I will work hand in hand with the State President to ensure that Malawi is doing well in sports,” she said.
Meanwhile analyst Parry Chinyama expressed optimism that Wiskies will look into all abandoned sports projects to ensure that there is a continuation.

“We need to give her ample time as she has just been appointed. I am sure that it is all to do with policies. I am hopeful that her ministry will provide policies that favour sports development,” Chinyama said
