Mighty Wanderers players have been energised after the team’s president Thom Mpinganjira and board gave them a K500,000 bonus each for stunning rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 in a TNM Super League match played at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.
Wanderers Football Development Director Tiya Somba Banda and captain Felix Zulu confirmed the development.
Somba Banda said Mpinganjira, a philanthropist, decided to reward the players for their bravery and spirited performance.
“The president’s vision and board’s strategic intent is to build and keep on building a high-performance centred team, and a competitive rewards system is a key component of the process. This gesture from the president and the board is a true testament and commitment of living the strategic intent,” he said.
Somba Banda said they hoped Wanderers players would be inspired by the gesture and derby win.

“The coach and players have also shown this commitment by the huge impressive performance not just in the Bullets game but the season this far.
“Beating Bullets is not just winning the game or the derby; it is winning the bragging rights all year till we play them again in the second round and befits the half million Kwach

bonus,” he said.
On his part, Zulu said they had been motivated by the gesture and would strive to chalk positive results throughout.

“We are very excited with the gesture. Half a million Kwacha is a lot of money. Surely, we will continue working hard in each and every game to please the president and board,” he said.
New signing Blessings Mwalilino scored the lone goal in the first half to help Wanderers move to two points of leaders Bullets, who have played seven matches, one ahead of the Nomads.
It was Wanderers’ first league win over their rivals since 2021 when they last defeated Bullets 1-0 through a Vincent Nyangulu goal on July 25 of that year.
