By Bernard Mhone:
The Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) has lost part of its sponsorship for the body’s Premier Division.
Twelve-Mzuzu based individuals, who were contributing K5 million to co-sponsor the league with Bishop Simama and Sons, did not renew their contract at the end of the 2024 season.
NRFA Chairperson Masiya Nyasulu disclosed this during the launch of the 2025 edition at Luwinga Technical Centre in Mzuzu City on Sunday.
However, Nyasulu said there was no need to panic as the league had already identified new sponsors who would be unveiled soon.

“Mzuzu 12 will not renew the one-year contract which we signed. At the moment, we have already finalised discussions with new sponsors. They will bring a decent package and people will be shocked,” he said.
Nyasulu commended Mzuzu 12 for co-sponsoring the league, which he said ignited competition.
Mzuzu 12 officials could not be reached for a comment.
Before the start of the 2024 season, Mzuzu 12 pumped in K5 million for the league to be sponsored to the tune of K25 million as Simama and sons contributed K20 million.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Second Vice President Lameck Zetu Khonje, who graced the launch, said they expected a competitive season to produce strong Super League candidates.
“We have seen a beautiful launch, with classic play of football from both teams, and we anticipate a competitive season. Indeed, it is in line with our agenda of transforming the game,” he said.
During the launch, Embangweni United defeated Lube Masters 2-1.
A total of 16 teams will tussle for the championship this season.
