Parliament has given the Executive the greenlight to receive two grants worth K49.7 billion from the African Development Fund and International Development Association
The first grant of K33.7 billion from African Development Fund is meant to finance the Rumphi Water and Sanitation Services Improvement Project.

Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe said the objective of the project is to increase access to sustainable and climate resilient potable water supply and safely managed sanitation services in Rumphi and surrounding areas.
“Specifically, the project will see the construction of a climate resilient sewerage network and wastewater treatment plant and establishment of a solid waste management site,” Gwengwe said.

He added that the project is expected to benefit 158,000 people in the district and surrounding areas once completed.
“Fifty one percent of the beneficiaries will be females, who will also get job opportunities,” he said.
The House also approved that government should receive K16 billion from International Development Association for the Southern African Development Community Regional Statistics Project.
The objective of the project is to strengthen the institutional capacity of the National Statistical Office to produce, disseminate and use quality statistics while increasing regional harmonisation and collaboration.

Democratic Progressive Party spokesperson on matters of finance Ralph Jooma commended the government for choosing grants instead of loans.
“These funds are coming as grants, such that the Malawi Government will not be required to pay back. So, this is timely,” Jooma said.
Both bills got overwhelming support.
