Portland Cement Company has donated 600 bags of cement to support the ongoing expansion efforts of the Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, a division of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
Portland Cement Chief Executive Officer Jianguo Liu emphasised the company’s commitment to uplifting the communities in which they operate.
“We are proud to contribute a truckload of 600 bags of our premium high-strength cement, SupaSet, to support this expansion project. The value of this donation exceeds K12 million which underscores our dedication to corporate social responsibility, particularly in the spheres of health and education.
“Our collaboration with Raising Malawi and the Ministry of Health on this project is a testament to our commitment to building not just for the present, but for future generations,” Liu said.
Eric Borgostein, a paediatric surgeon at the hospital, expressed gratitude for Portland Cement’s timely support.

He said the Mercy James Centre is not only the country’s sole paediatric surgery facility but also a leading training centre in the region for complex paediatric surgery.
“The centre serves as a beacon of hope for our children’s future. By providing highly specialised paediatric surgery training to doctors, we are contributing to the advancement of healthcare across the region,” Borgostein said.
The expansion initiative aims to construct a two-story building that will accommodate wards for caretaker mothers of newborns requiring emergency surgery, temperature- controlled cold room storage, kitchen facilities and teaching rooms.
Since its establishment in 2017, the Mercy James Centre has provided crucial medical care, boasting a general ward capacity of 50 beds, including specialised high-density units.
