Premier Bet Malawi has officially handed over the newly constructed Zingwangwa Netball Academy to Blantyre City Council.
The academy, which is situated at Zingwangwa Youth Centre, features a synthetic floor netball court, two fully equipped washrooms with changing facilities and four modern offices for officials and administrators.
Premier Bet Community Manager Hamsa Mgaye said the project was a milestone in the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts aimed at strengthening its commitment to sports development in the country.
“We strongly believe that sports, especially netball, which is Malawi’s pride, can serve as a powerful tool for youth empowerment and national unity,” he said.

Mgaye said the initiative, which commenced in 2023 with an initial budget of K80 million, was designed to promote sports growth and enhance community participation.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) President Vitumbiko Gubuduza said the initiative comes at a crucial time when netball in Malawi continues to face some infrastructure challenges.
She said the academy would greatly help in closing the gap that has hindered the sport’s progress.
“For many years, netball has survived on sheer talent and passion, but proper facilities were missing to support consistent player development. This academy is a game-changer not only for Zingwangwa but for the entire country,” she said.

Blantyre City Council Director of Human Resource Alfred Nyengo said the council would take full responsibility of the academy to ensure that it operates smoothly.
“We will collaborate with sports stakeholders to make Zingwangwa a centre of netball excellence. Beyond sport, this academy provides young people with a platform to channel their energy into positive activities,” Nyengo said.
Group Village Headman Dida Zingwangwa said the facility would help steer young people away from harmful behaviours.
“This academy will not only develop sporting talent but also reduce cases of youths indulging in social vices,” said the traditional leader.
The official opening was marked by an exhibition match between Thoko Sisters and Zingwangwa Select, organised by Premier Projects Academy.
