Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor George Partridge has told Silver Strikers that he is not impressed with their recent performances across all competitions.

Partridge made the remarks after an interface meeting with Silver players and officials at the RBM auditorium in Lilongwe Thursday.

He said the team’s recent results had not been satisfactory.

“Let me be clear: sponsorship is a partnership. The Bank has invested in you and, in return, we expect results that reflect the true potential of Silver Strikers. Recent performances have not been at the level we know you can achieve. This must change.

“To the technical team, coaching staff and players, both men and women, I say this: dig deeper, push harder and play with the fire that has always defined Silver Strikers,” Partridge said.

His remarks come after Silver went three consecutive matches without a win.

Silver drew 0-0 with Chitipa United at Chitipa Stadium three weeks ago in the FDH Bank Premiership.

They then lost 3-0 to Karonga United at Karonga Stadium to exit the Airtel Top 8 3-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 2-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Last weekend, Silver drew 1-1 with rookies Luanar Mitundu at Dedza Stadium.

Silver are currently second in the FDH Bank Premiership with 22points from 11 matches, behind leaders Mighty Wanderers on goal difference.

Silver board chairperson George Kaudza Masina said the governor’s sentiments were justified.

“We need to be at our best always. We have no justification or excuse for performing poorly as a club. We got all the necessary support from the sponsors, so we need to pull up our socks,” he said.

In a related development, Partridge has urged Silver Ladies to fight for glory ahead of their participation in this year’s Caf Women’s Champions League/ Cosafa qualifier in Botswana next month.

“Do not go there to make up the numbers. Go there to compete, to dominate and to win. I believe in you. I believe you have what it takes to bring the Caf Champions League trophy home,” he said.

The team will make its maiden appearance at the Cosafa qualifier, which will be staged in Gaborone, Botswana, from August 20 to 29.

Silver qualified for the competition after winning the inaugural National Bank of Malawi Women’s Premiership last season.
