Malawi Women’s National Football Team goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo has been nominated for the inaugural Cosafa goalkeeper of the year award.
Sikelo, who plays for Kukoma Ntopwa Women’s Club, will compete for the award against South African duo Andile Dlamini and Kaylin Swart.
She is the third Scorchers player to be nominated for the inaugural Cosafa awards after midfielders Rose Kabzere and Leticia Chinyamula were nominated for the Most Promising Women’s Player of the Year award.
“It was a bumper year for Sikelo, who played a leading role as her club Ntopwa claimed the Fam Women’s Championship with a penalty shootout win over Ascent Academy, in which Sikelo saved the decisive spot kick.
“She then went on to help Malawi claim maiden Cosafa Women’s Championship crown with a 2-1 victory over Zambia,” reads Cosafa statement released Friday.

Sikelo also took part in the 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League/Cosafa qualifier in Durban, South Africa.
Ntopwa owner Isaac Jomo Osman said Sikelo deserved it.
“I am not surprised and she performed well during the two tournaments,” Osman said.
Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili, who guided the team to maiden Cosafa success, is also likely to be nominated for the regional award.
