Sounds Acoustic Alliance of Malawi Session at Francaise de Blantyre has decided to celebrate the life of singer, guitarist, music teacher and composer Rebecca Mwalwenje with a tribute showcase on Thursday. Mwalwenje died last Thursday and was laid to rest on Saturday in Zimbabwe.
Sounds of Malawi acoustic session host, ethno-musician Waliko Makhala, said on Monday that they thought it wise to hold a showcase to celebrate music feats. Mwalwenje’s “Rebecca Mwalwenje was a talented musician.
We, as Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session, thought it wise to celebrate her life and legacy.
Her international exploits in South Korea, among many others, speak volumes of her determination and passion for the creative industries,” Makhala said.
He said the tribute showcase in her honour is also Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session’s tradition to celebrate its stars since “we did not manage to attend her funeral in Zimbabwe”.
Apart from hosting the concert, Makhala will also perform, sharing the stage with Agorosso, Chigo Nyasulu and Winnie Msowoya. “We thought of coming together to do this tribute. Rebecca’s demise has left an indelible mark on the arts family,” she said.
Chigo, who now performs with Mibawa Band, said he worked with Mwalwenje and that they were in the first team of Lusubilo Band.
“I have a lot of good memories in different platforms including in South Korea,” he said. Mwalwenje came to the limelight with Lusubilo Band, leading in vocals and the band.
The band also went on to triumph in competitions such as Chibuku Road to Fame spearheaded by Musicians Union of Malawi.
She worked for Music Crossroads Malawi for six years as music teacher and also underwent a Move exchange programme in Norway for 10 months as well as trained with The Global Music Academy.
She recorded an album with Lusubilo Band, where she led in songs such as ‘Africa Inuka’ and ‘Kalonga’. Born on November, 18 1988, Mwalwenje came from Mwambuli Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu, in Karonga District.
