Southern Region Volleyball League (SRVL) is running a self-sponsored tournament to keep the sport active, Malawi News Sport has learnt.
Due to a lack of sponsorship, the league has been running two competitions using contributions from the teams.
SRVL’s Blantyre and Chiradzulu Chairperson Andrew Kasasi confirmed that teams contribute from their own pockets to pay for the officiating and cover for their own transportation costs.
“It is tough to motivate the teams without a sponsor. However, the love of the game is what keeps the teams going. The SRVL has helped with some match balls and contacts are being made to different corporates to help in sponsoring the league,” Kasasi said.
Despite having no sponsors, SRVL also introduced a social corporate league to engage with potential sponsors.

“Apart from this competitive league, there is also a Social Corporate League running in parallel to the competitive league. We believe that if we engage with the potential sponsors by having this parallel league, we may get some support in future.
“We are as confident as we have seen about six corporate teams joining the league including the following: Malawi Revenue Authority, Blantyre Water Board, Old Mutual, NBS, Unima Staff and others,” he said.
Currently, the competitive league has teams such as Michonya, Thunders, Mubas, NeuralSpikers, NeuralQueens, Cobbe Barracks, Green Eagles, DMI, Chikwawa Spikers, Catholic University, Gemz, Unima, Mangochi Spikers and many more.
Like most leagues, SRVL used a round robin format, with an emphasis on home and away games to determine winners.
