Two Malawi Defence Force-sponsored teams, Mafco and Kamuzu Barracks, had the worst disciplinary record in the just-ended TNM Super League.
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) released the figures on Tuesday. The 2025 season produced 648 yellow cards and 34 red cards. Mafco topped the list with three red cards and 65 yellow cards in 30 matches, while KB had four red cards and 53 yellow cards.
Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe said he was disappointed.
“We got most yellow cards for verbal retaliation. But we appeal to referees to treat us as players not soldiers,” he said.
KB general secretary Albert Midian said their disciplinary record was a major concern.

“Football is a game of contact, so yellow and red cards are inevitable. Some referees also have negative perceptions towards military teams,” Midian said, pledging that the team would improve next season.
Relegated Mzuzu City Hammers received 50 yellow cards and three red cards, while Mighty Tigers had 45 yellow cards and four red cards. Civil Service United had 45 yellow cards and one red card.
Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said he was not surprised. “Most players from army teams play with emotion,” he said.
Newly crowned TNM Super League champions Mighty Wanderers were the most disciplined team, with 25 yellow cards and one red card.

Referee Jimmy Phiri issued the most cards, 48 yellow and two red in 13 matches, while Edson Chagala issued 19 yellow and five red in eight matches. Easter Zimba officiated the most matches, 16, followed by Alfred Chilinda with 14.
