Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has injected K22 million into this year’s National Schools Swimming Championship slated for tomorrow at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi District.
The competition will attract swimmers from various schools across the country’s lakeshore districts of Karonga, Rumphi, Nkhata Bay, Likoma, Nkhotakota, Salima and Mangochi.

Sports Council Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said five swimmers will represent each of the seven districts.
“We will have two girls and three boys from each district. These are the swimmers who qualified for the finals and will vie for ultimate glory.
This competition faced some delays because of logistical challenges. But everything is now in place and we are set for an entertaining contest.

“After launching this competition in May last year at Chintheche in Nkhata Bay District, the finals were expected to take place in October. But due to some challenges, this did not happen. But everything has now been sorted out and the finals are on this Saturday [tomorrow],” Ntulumbwa said.
He said Sports Council has bankrolled the competition to help unearth swimming talent from the lakeshore.
“We believe this tournament will help to identify young swimmers from our lakeshore districts. We will be giving them the platform to showcase their skills. We see this competition as a solution to the country’s lack of top class swimmers who can compete at international level,” Ntulumbwa said.
Organizer Malawi Schools Sports Association president Blackson Malamula said they expect 35 swimmers at the competition.
