A police officer from Soche Police Station in Blantyre died in the early hours of yesterday after being hit by a stray bullet from a fellow officer.
Malawi Police Service spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed the development, and identified the deceased as Sub- Inspector Petros Mhango.
Kalaya said this happened when the officers were on a raid in Chileka, Blantyre.
“We received a tip that some criminals wanted to attack an Egyptian businessperson in Chileka and our officers rushed for a crackdown. When our officers got to the place, they found that the thugs had already broken into the house.
“In the course of the raid, bullets were fired and, sadly, one of the bullets landed on Sub-Inspector Mhango from Soche Police. We are mourning with the family over the death of the officer,” Kalaya said.
He further said the two suspected criminals were also shot dead during the raid and that police are still investigating the matter as they are yet to arrest other suspects.
Mhango came from Mahenga Village, Traditional Authority Mbwana, in Nkhata Bay District.
