The Malawi Women’s National Football Team has received a huge boost after United States-based striker Temwa Chawinga and three other players joined camp in Morocco Sunday.

Temwa arrived in Morocco last night whereas three other players—midfielders Lyna James, Tendai Sani and striker Chisomo Banda—joined camp Sunday morning.

James, Sani and Banda were initially dropped from the 23-member squad for the Wafcon finals but found their way back after the squad members’ number was increased to 26.

Scorchers Coach Fazili

The arrival of the four players means Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili has 25 players in the squad.

Asimenye Simwaka is yet to join the squad as she is in Scotland for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary Abdul Chiwalo asked for ample time before he could comment on the Scorchers squad update Sunday.

This could be a big boost for the Scorchers ahead of the upcoming TotalEnergies Caf Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals, which will take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.

Speaking with Fam Media Sunday, Fazili said preparations were going on smoothly.

“We are progressing well. Morale is high in camp and everyone is good,” he said.

Fazili said the arrival of James, Sani and Banda would give him options.

Temwa, alongside the three other players, could be available for the Scorchers final practice match against Ghana on Wednesday.

The Scorchers lost 2-1 to Morocco during last week’s friendly match at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Malawi will start their campaign against defending champions Nigeria on July 28 before meeting Egypt at Moulay Hassan Stadium three days later. They will wrap up their group stage campaign against Zambia on August 5 at Al Madina Stadium.

Temwa last played for the team in February last year in a 2-0 loss to Zambia in an international friendly in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Temwa has taken her goal tally to nine in the National Women’s Soccer League this season after scoring in a 2-2 stalemate with San Diego Wave on Friday.
