Advertorial:
The Medical Council of Malawi (Council) is undertaking a significant revision of its existing Act, the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, No. 17 of 1987. This move comes at a time when the health sector has experienced considerable improvements, leading to notable advancements in health practices over the past 36 years of the Act’s existence.
In pursuit of an inclusive and well-rounded approach, the Council convened a consultative meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Health. This gathering aimed at presenting the suggested changes after multiple regional consultations with all stakeholders, including the public, practitioners, training institutions, health facilities, and professional associations. In addition, it was intended to get diverse perspectives and ensure that the proposed bill considers all viewpoints of Malawians.
Among the significant changes proposed in the new bill presented to the parliamentary committee on health is the suggested renaming of the regulatory body from the Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) to the Health Professions Council of Malawi (HPCMW). The new name is intended to encompass all health professions that fall under the Council’s regulation. The agreed-upon name for the proposal was a unanimous decision, and it bears similarity to those of neighbouring countries.
The new bill includes additional clauses addressing crucial aspects concerning registration, private practice, education and training, disciplinary provisions, inspection provisions, offenses, and penalties for misconduct.
