By Cathy Maulidi:
Over 20,000 unemployed teachers have petitioned Parliament, asking that the august House should push government to recruit them in the 2024-25 financial year.
These are the teachers who were left out when government recruited 2,681 of their colleagues last month.
A representative of the unemployed teachers Willard Jonazi said the exercise left out many unemployed teachers, some of whom have been at home for over five years.
“We are asking Parliament to push for our recruitment. There are over 20,000 unemployed teachers out there. Government pledged to recruit over 6,000 in the current budget but ended up recruiting just over 2,500.

“Government has made another pledge in the 2024-25 national budget to recruit over 10,000. We want government to fulfill this pledge and Parliament should help us on this,” Jonazi said.
He added that the unemployed teachers want transparency and accountability in the manner government will handle the recruitment process.
“Government, through the Ministry of Education, should make the resources available to make sure that at least the 10,000 out of the 20,000 are recruited as we wait for efforts to recruit the rest,” Jonazi said.
Vice Chairperson for the Education Committee of Parliament Ephraim Nayeja said the committee will deliberate the petition once they get it from the clerk where it had been submitted.
