A full council meeting held at Zomba City Council offices Monday has resolved to allow the council to, if need be, facilitate the reconstruction of Mpondabwino bridge.
Members of the council, who moved to the Mpondabwino bridge site, agreed to first assess the bridge.
The bridge reportedly started developing cracks, forcing community members to push for its closure on Saturday.
On Monday, an emergency full council meeting held in Zomba saw council members being taken to the bridge’s site so that they could appreciate the situation.
Zomba City Mayor, Councillor Christopher Jana, said the bridge was a crucial part of the city as it connected the city and Mpira Ward, which he said had a lot of residents.

“We have no option but to let assessors monitor the bridge.
“From there, we are going to allow reconstruction from the outcomes of the assessment team,” he said.

Zomba Civil Society Network Chairperson, Nicholas Mwisama, said they appreciated the move to immediately call for a full council meeting on the issue.
“We will wait for the assessment team. We would like to appreciate the council for immediately effecting a full council meeting. This is how we want things to be done,” he said.

This is a project that commenced in the year 2020.
By 2022, Mpondabwino bridge was completed, allowing cyclists, motorcycle operators and cars to use it.
Residents of the area closed the bridge on Saturday, alleging that it had cracks.
