hakwera has said his administration will complete projects that are being implemented this year and start new ones.
Speaking to Malawians in Lilongwe on Sunday, ahead of New Year celebrations, Chakwera said 2023 was a year when the country had to surmount a number of challenges.
He said, during the first quarter of the year, the country overcame a cholera outbreak, drought and Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which made landfall in Malawi on March 11.
“We overcame these challenges by uniting our resources and efforts to rescue and serve the most vulnerable and by refusing to point fingers at each other for disasters that were not the doing of any of us.

“In that quarter, we also overcame a serious anomaly in our governance setup, when the Office of the President and Cabinet, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Directorate of Public Prosecution, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Law Society, which all exist to work together in serving the interests of Malawians, were engaged in a feud of egos that was taking our nation’s development nowhere,” Chakwera said.
Among positives registered in the year gone by, Chakwera cited eased access to information.
He also said the country celebrated the Malawi Human Rights Commission’s attainment of the highest rating in its functions.
The President has since said he is positive that 2024 is the year for pushing every wasteful part of government out of the way, whether that means pushing out people that are simply wasting time in government offices or wasting government money intended for serving Malawians.

Meanwhile, accountability advocate Willy Kambwandira has said it is good that the President has acknowledged that hardships compounded life in Malawi last year.
“However; his statement is lacking as it is not offering Malawians hope, in terms of how his government intends to deal with the myriad struggles Malawians continue to face,” he said.
