The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has disclosed that it will reach out to 4.4 million people with relief items for the lean season.
This comes at a time the department has finished working on the 2023- 24 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Plan.
Dodma Deputy Director of Response Fyawupi Mwafongo told The Daily Times that the targeted people were projected by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac).
He said some councils have a six-month food deficit, such that there is a need to reach out to them.
Mwafongo said the provision of food assistance would commence from October this year, in line with the Mvac report.

“The food assistance will be provided through in-kind food distribution or cash transfers or a mix of both modalities.
“We will be able to give out detailed information by the end of the week once everything has been finalised. But we, as Dodma, are ready to reach out to people that will be affected by hunger,” Mwafongo said.
In September last year, Dodma said it had secured K76.27 billion to help 3.8 million people that are food insecure in 27 districts.
A Mvac assessment report projected that 3.8 million people in 27 districts and four cities of the country would be food insecure during the 2022- 23 lean season, specifically from November 2022 to March 2023.
