Conglomerate MBL Holdings has asked government to create a conducive business environment for local business entities to flourish and contribute to the growth of the economy.
The call was made in Blantyre on Wednesday when the company hosted annual prayers, marking the start of their 2024 business year.
Speaking in an interview after the prayers, MBL Holdings Group Director of Operations Joseph Khupe said, apart from creating the environment, government, being the biggest purchaser in Malawi, should make sure that it prioritises competent and local enterprises.
He observed that supporting local companies is a catalyst for development because companies like MBL are able to make products for local consumption and export markets.
“We try to support each other as the private sector,” he said.

The prayers had sermons from different preachers including Monsignor Bonface Tamani, Father Elizeo Mtharika and former CCAP Blantyre Synod general secretary Billy Gama.
Speaking after his sermon, Gama said it is important to put God first in businesses because his wisdom guides businesses to prosperity.
“The prayer has been that since God has been the company’s saviour, He should continue to pour his wisdom and blessings for further growth of the business,” Gama said.
MBL Holdings is a parent company for subsidiaries across different sectors which produce goods for local consumption and exports.
