Zomba District Chief Educational Officer Medson Mbilizi has dared schools in the country to embrace cultural days as part of promoting and preserving culture.
Mbilizi said cultural days are part of encouraging learners to “love their own”, especially during this time when others are embracing Western culture.
He made the remarks last weekend when he graced a cultural day at Matiti Primary School in Zomba.
During the cultural day, learners from the school showcased a number of activities including narration of history of different ethnic groups and traditional dances.

The learners, who won the hearts of many people, also prepared local dishes at the event.
“We have been complaining of moral cultural decay in the country and this is because our culture is being eroded by technology but we can trigger an interest in learners about our culture through cultural days,” Mbilizi said.
Matiti Primary School Head teacher Leah Malizani Pahuwa said the cultural day was part of putting into practice some of the topics that they teach the learners.
“Much as the cultural day was part of ensuring easy interaction amongst teachers and learners, we also wanted the learners to understand better the history of Malawian tribes,” Pahuwa said.

She further said that they intend to introduce a schools cultural club which will be spearheading the promotion of cultural activities amongst the learners.
Group Village Head Makungula, who graced the event, urged schools to be holding cultural days regularly.
Standard five learner Hilda Tambala, who participated in the activities including preparing nsima made from cassava, known as kondowole, said the cultural day provided them with an opportunity to showcase the best of Malawian culture through traditional dances and food.
