The Malawi Men’s Under-20 National Football Team might have finished the 2025 African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Games with a silver medal but the team’s starlet Mwisho Mhango deservedly stole the show from the champions.
Mhango won the tournament’s Golden Boot award with five goals in as many matches and also scooped the player of the tournament accolade.
In five matches, the youngster won two man-of-the match awards, underlining his growing class.
On winning two accolades, Mhango was the epitome of modesty, hailing teammates for their contribution during the matches.

“On my own, I could not have achieved the feat. Teammates were amazing and their support was awesome. They were able to give me chances to flourish. They were even encouraging me to utilise the chances they were creating,” he said.
Mhango, 17, said his desire was to play in Europe to develop his match and help Malawi win top medals at junior or senior levels.
He said he started his career in Mzuzu with City Stars, a side that produced the likes of TP Mazembe and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets former playmaker Patrick Mwaungulu and the People’s Team attacker Wongani Lungu.
“I used to play for City Stars before I signed for Ascent Academy towards the end of the year 2016,” he said.

Mhango made his Malawi Under-17 National Football Team debut in 2017, when the country hosted the African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Games.
A year later, he was included in the under-20 side.
