An annual event known as Nsembe Ya Pachaka Ku Khulubvi will be held Saturday at Khulubvi M’bona Shrine, starting early in the morning through to the afternoon with a number of activities set to take centre stage.
Member of the organising team and renowned visual artist Eva Chikabadwa said Thursday that this is an event which has always been there and that it happens annually.
“Advocates gather for thanksgiving and pray for good rains and harvest. They pray to Chisumphi Namalenga through M’bona. They pray to be protected from natural disasters, diseases and other bad occurrences,” Chikabadwa said.
She said that traditional leaders first gather to rebuild M’bonas house and a house for his wife Salima and his servant Chamanga.
“After building these houses, they make a call for the annual gathering. Each traditional authority in the Shire Valley, including Paramount Lundu, have a role to play during the construction of the houses. For example, Tengani’s duty is to lift M’bona’s house roof which is built on top of his head,” Chikabadwa said.

She further revealed that Traditional Authority Ngabu in Nsanje is responsible for leading the construction of M’bona’s house which is built every year as he is considered as M’bona’s son.
“The night before the main event, people gather to celebrate the culture through dancing, chatting and beer drinking. They do this until morning,” Chikabadwa said.
She added that the event will also offer a lot of information to people through various displays.
“There are plans to document all this information and then keep it safely in a museum that is set to be built. We will launch the museum project on the day,” she said.
