Actor Kelvin Ngoma’s dream of representing Malawi at the finals of the African Monologue Challenge in Uganda this month end has hit a setback as he has not managed to meet travel costs.
The Lilongwe-based actor, who has starred in a number of films including Chiwetel Ejiofor’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, said yesterday that the organisers of the African Monologue Challenge are sponsoring everything for the participants except travel costs.
“The cost of the return ticket is K1.7 million but I am unable to raise the funds on my own. This is an important event, especially in the creative world, as it will accord me a chance to showcase my talent as well as represent Malawi. This is why I am calling upon well-wishers to help me attend the event,” Ngoma said.
He said he had tried all means to raise funds but failed, hence reaching out to the general public for support.
Close to 2,000 actors competed in the competition, with 10, including Ngoma, being nominated for the grand finale set for July 28 2024.
Apart from Ngoma, other finalists in the competition are from Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, South Africa, Ivory Coast and Kenya.
