Malawi Assemblies of God has commended the government’s idea of increasing the quantity of exports, saying this is key to national development.
In the 2024-25 budget statement which Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda presented to Parliament this month, he indicated that the current administration wants to shore up the production of valuable goods to improve the country’s balance of payment position.
Assemblies of God President, Bishop Andrew Dube, made the remarks during a meeting between church leaders and President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe yesterday morning.
“It is, indeed, time for Malawi to increase its production and exports. We hope that measures will be taken to address the current fiscal, forex and debt crises in Malawi. We pray and believe [that] this budget will be a step towards tackling these challenges,” he said.
Dube further commended the President for promoting agriculture, tourism and mining, saying these sectors have the potential to elevate the country’s economic status.

“It is noteworthy that 30 percent of the K5.98 trillion budget will be allocated to production projects. This demonstrates the objective of the 2024-25 budget to expedite economic recovery.
“Your emphasis on inclusive growth, economic stability and the pursuit of sustainable practices speaks to a commitment to leaving no one behind and ensuring a better future for generations to come,” he said.
Chakwera assured the church of his commitment to implementing policies aimed at transforming various sectors in pursuit of the realisation of the Malawi 2063 vision.
“We are not yet where we want to be, but we are not where we were. Progress is being made,” Chakwera said.

The President cited the attainment of the International Monetary Fund’s Extended Credit Facility programme, which has resulted in the resumption of direct budget support by traditional donors, as a significant step in overcoming current economic challenges.
