The doings of Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) will temporarily be run by the board of trustees, led by its chairperson Wycliffe Chimwendo, Arts & Culture has learnt.
This follows dissections which have been there amongst the members since the current National Executive Committee (Nec) took over the operations of the music body, led by its president Vita Chirwa, in 2022 from the Gloria Manong’a-led regime.
Some members queried the results of the polls, describing the elections as “not free and fair”.
However, following a meeting that took place recently in Lilongwe, affiliates discussed a number of sticky issues including the verdict of the grievance they raised.
One of the members, who was part of the meeting but did not want to be named, said “justice was what we were looking for”.

Mum Board of Trustees has since issued communication, giving a notice to the members and the general public.
“Another meeting will be called to chart a way forward. Meanwhile, all business of the union has reverted to the board of trustees,” reads the letter signed by the board of trustees secretary Wellington Chatepa.
Some reports on Friday indicated that Chirwa and crew had resigned following the divisions but when contacted on Saturday, Chimwendo maintained that “all is well” and that they have withheld the resolutions for now as they wait for the verdict.
“You may recall that some members lodged a complaint as regards the results of the elections and, so, this has been on-going and now what remains is the verdict. So, as we wait for the verdict, we have temporarily taken over the affairs,” he said.

He said issues will be fixed and called for members to unite and walk together for the furtherance of the union and the creative industry.
Chirwa also laughed off the resignation talk but said all issues were being handled by the board of trustees.
