Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has bemoaned lack of support as the country is yet to host high profile international title bouts.
The board’s President Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba said a title bout involving World Boxing Council (WBC), African Boxing Union (ABU) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) would cost at least K25 million.
“This amount would cover for sanction fees, contractual fee [boxers’ purse], transportation and accommodation for boxers and ringside officials.
“Unfortunately, companies are not forthcoming to support us. If we were to host a WBC bout, chances of winning a belt at home would be high,” Zimba said.
Meanwhile, retired boxer Isaac Chilemba advised the body to hold symposiums to woo the corporate world to support the sport.
“Companies can come in when they see value. As it is, they do not see any value. I believe boxing is one of the sporting disciplines that helps promoters and boxers to make a lot of money.
“However, this happens only when the environment is conducive for all stakeholders. In this case, sponsors can support the sport when they are assured of gaining mileage,” the South Africa-based boxer said.
