Castle Premier Soccer League side Caps United are interested in signing Malawian and Zanaco Football Club striker Chawanangwa Kaonga in January next year.
Kaonga’s current contract with Zanaco is set to expire on December 31 this year.
In an interview Monday, Kaonga’s manager Fred Kalonga said Caps had offered his client a lucrative deal.
“We have received a good offer from Caps United. At the moment, Kaonga is a Zanaco player and, so, we want to respect them,” Kalonga said.
Meanwhile, Kaonga has rejected a new contract from Zanaco.
“Zanaco offered him a new contract but he was not happy with the terms; so, he did not sign it. If we get another offer from Zanaco, we will see what will happen,” he said.
The Flames forward was not even on the bench as Zanaco played against Red Arrows on Sunday.
This has fuelled speculation that the Malawian could leave the club in January.
His compatriot Chimwemwe Idana was in the starting line-up.
However, Robert Saizi did not feature for Zanaco.
Kaonga joined Zanaco on a one-year contract after leaving Silver Strikers in 2022.
After a successful debut year in Zambia, he was rewarded with a two-year contract in 2023.
Before moving to Zambia, Kaonga had a good season with Silver, having scored 12 goals in the TNM Super League in 2022.
The versatile forward returned to Silver after completing a six-month ban from Fifa for breach of contract.
In 2020, he was at the centre of a transfer wrangle involving Sporting Club (South Africa) and Costa do Sol of Mozambique, with the Mozambican club reporting Sporting to Fifa.
The club claimed that he had a running contract with them.
The player and Sporting lost the case.
While playing for Costa, he helped them to win the Mocambola League in 2019, having scored 10 goals.
At Sporting, he also impressed and was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa but the deal did not materialise.
