By Bernard Mhone:

Veteran boxer Wilson ‘Shasha’ Masamba underlined his credentials when he defeated David Kafula in a non-title bout at Linde Lounge and Grill in Mzuzu City on Sunday.

Masamba was declared winner on points.

The Malawi Defence Force soldier admitted that Kafula gave him a good run for his money.

“I am still strong. I have won the bout because of experience. My opponent is a very good boxer and is strong,” Masamba said.

Despite suffering defeat, Kafula said he was satisfied with his performance.

“He is a seasoned boxer and was my mentor four years ago when I was an amateur boxer.

“It was a difficult task against him,” Kafula said.

In the main supporting bout, Wongani Kainga beat Mussah Mkwanda through technical knockout in the third round.

Meanwhile, one of the organisers, Jonathan Nandolo, founder of Gladiator Boxing Promotions, has said he is impressed with the turnout of fans.

“We are satisfied with the patronage. It shows that people really missed boxing. We will organise more bouts,” Nandolo said.

One of the sponsors [JJB Dream Car Imports] representatives Malumbo Sichinga said they were impressed with the bout, saying they would continue bankrolling the sport to promote talent.
