The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and Public Affairs Committee (Pac) have tipped Vice President Michael Usi to uphold justice, fairness and equality in the country.
In a statement signed by its president, Archbishop George Tambala, ECM has congratulated Usi for the appointment.
The bishops said it is their hope that the Vice President will be committed to the development of the country.
“His long and distinguished career, marked by a commitment to public service and a deep understanding of the needs of our people, qualifies him for this challenging role,” reads the statement by the ECM, a plenary assembly of bishops, the Catholic Secretariat and its six committees.

“We believe that his tenure of leadership as the State Vice President will be instrumental in fostering peace, unity and prosperity for all Malawians. We pray for God’s guidance and blessings as he embarks on this new chapter in the service to our nation,” the bishops said.
On the other hand, the Public Affairs Committee (Pac), through its Publicity Secretary, Gilford Matonga, has also congratulated Usi on his appointment.
Matonga said it is the body’s desire that he performs the duties of his office with a committed heart, like his predecessor, Saulos Chilima.
“The Vice President is coming in at a very difficult time when Malawi is still mourning the passing of the former Vice President, Dr Chilima. It’s not an easy time to be appointed at all, as well as the times that we as a nation are going through. So we congratulate him and wish him the best,” Matonga said.

Pac has since asked Malawians not to judge Usi based on his other personal engagement as a dramatist. It said in the past four years he has been minster, he has performed well.
“We cannot judge somebody because of the aspect of drama; this is a misjudgment of an individual’s performance. Let’s not forget that UTM leader Saulos Chilima picked Usi as a running mate. I think we can safely say that Chilima saw some leadership qualities that made him choose him,” he said.
Usi has taken the mantle of Malawi’s Vice President following Chilima’s death in a military plane crash on June 10.
